Lib Dems Latest Plot to Adopt Constitution
The Liberal Democrats have launched a
campaign to adopt the original text of the EU Constitution. They
are calling for the text to be adopted by the European Parliament
in a formal sitting if agreement is not reached by 1 May 2004.
Jonathan Evans MEP, Leader of the British Conservatives
in the European Parliament, said: "The Liberal Democrats will
stop at nothing to sell out Britain's national interest. Our laws
on issues like asylum, immigration and border controls must be decided
in Britain not in Brussels. Their latest plan calls for the text
to be adopted by the Parliament as it stands now. The result would
be a federal, harmonised Europe.
"This is another attempt by the Lib Dems
to force through a Constitution, attempting to bypass the democratic
process of the Council of Ministers. They are effectively blackmailing
the Council into a premature agreement.
"The Lib Dems are the 'say yes to everything
in Europe' Party. They want the Constitution now, regardless of
the effect it will have on the British people's lives."
